10 American Hostages Still Being Held in Gaza, Reports Say

According to National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, there are still 10 American hostages being held in Gaza as of Sunday. Three of them, who are women and children, are eligible for release under the latest agreement.

Anticipation is growing as more hostages are expected to be freed this weekend. Sullivan appeared on multiple Sunday political news shows to discuss the ongoing situation. He revealed that the United States anticipates at least one American hostage to be released on Sunday.

Sullivan disclosed that among the 10 American hostages, there are two women, one child, and seven men. They were taken captive by Hamas in Israel on October 7.

The three women and children meet the criteria set by the deal reached by several countries, including the United States. This deal established a four-day truce, which commenced a few days earlier. As part of this truce, a group of Thai, Filipino, and Israeli hostages were already released starting on Friday.

Sullivan expressed cautious optimism that one of the American hostages, a four-year-old girl named Abigail Idan, will be released today. However, he stressed that they cannot be certain until she is safely out of Gaza.

Sullivan stated, “So, we are going to watch this, hour by hour, and hopefully have a moment of joy, where one of the Americans is safely out and ultimately reunited with her family.”

Despite not knowing the current condition of Idan, Sullivan remains hopeful. He said, “What we know or have reason to believe is that she is still alive, and we are hopeful that she will be reunited with her family soon.”

However, he hesitated to provide more details, as he did not want to give false hope. He also emphasized the importance of Hamas following through with its commitments.

During the four-day truce between Israel and Hamas, a total of 50 hostages are expected to be released. However, no Americans have been freed thus far. On Friday, 24 hostages were released in the first wave, followed by an additional 17 on Saturday. Among those released was a 9-year-old Israeli-Irish girl who was initially believed to be dead. Hamas caused a slight delay before releasing her.

As part of the agreement, Israel agreed to release approximately 150 Palestinian prisoners, including women and teenagers, from prisons in the West Bank.

Sullivan acknowledged that Hamas gained certain benefits from the prisoners’ release and the opportunity to regroup during the pause in fighting. He recognized the difficult decisions faced by Israeli leaders in these situations.

Since the initial attack by Hamas on October 7, around 240 people have been taken hostage. This attack resulted in the death of over 1,200 Israelis. In response, Israel has heavily bombarded Gaza, leading to the deaths of over 13,000 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry.
