In the ongoing competition to become the Republican candidate for the 2024 US presidential election, a spokesman for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s Political Action Committee (PAC) has publicly admitted that DeSantis is “way behind” former President Donald Trump. This unexpected announcement comes from Steve Cortes, a representative of the Never Back Down PAC, who admits the campaign has “work to do.”

Cortes described DeSantis as the “clear underdog” in the current race, saying “Right now in national polling, we are way behind, I’ll be the first to admit that.” He also acknowledged the former president’s superior debating skills, stating “Is Ron the debater that Trump is? No, no he isn’t. Absolutely Donald Trump is the maestro of it.”

Despite the uphill battle, Cortes reaffirmed their intentions to win the race, believing that the competition itself will improve the potential of the candidates, “If we do not prevail — and I have every intent on winning, I didn’t sign up for this to come in second — but if we do not prevail I will tell you this, we will make President Trump better for having this kind of primary.”
