Adam Laxalt Steps Down from DeSantis Super PAC

Former Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt has resigned from his position as chair of the pro-DeSantis Super PAC Never Back Down. This marks the second significant departure from the organization just a few weeks before the Iowa caucus.

Recent reports have detailed internal conflicts between Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s presidential campaign and the Never Back Down Super PAC. With DeSantis struggling to gain traction in the polls, both sides are searching for someone to hold responsible.

Laxalt joined the Never Back Down PAC in April as chair, but his time in the role was short-lived as he has now officially resigned. In a letter addressed to the board, Laxalt expressed his ongoing commitment to DeSantis as the 2024 GOP nominee but stated that he needed to redirect his attention to other matters such as his family and legal practice.

In addition to Laxalt’s resignation, Chris Jankowski, the chief executive of Never Back Down, resigned in November, citing differences that extended beyond strategic disagreements.

Never Back Down’s objective has always been to support Governor Ron DeSantis’s presidential bid. However, the challenging political climate and internal conflicts have made it increasingly difficult for Jankowski to achieve that shared goal.

Jankowski remains supportive of DeSantis’s presidential aspirations and hopes that he will become the 47th President of the United States.

From the moment of its establishment, Never Back Down has encountered numerous obstacles. The organization has failed to devise an effective strategy that resonates with Republican voters and has pushed the boundaries of what traditional PACs can do in relation to a formal presidential campaign.

Reports of internal conflicts have also been prevalent. In November, during a discussion about former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, tensions flared between Never Back Down and Scott Wagner, a trusted confidant of DeSantis.

This heated argument occurred during a small meeting with nine board members and senior staff members who were discussing budgeting.

The ongoing drama has led the DeSantis campaign to look toward the newly formed PAC Fight Right, which appears to be taking over the production of DeSantis’s television advertisements.

However, this is not the only issue that the DeSantis campaign has faced. In November, it was revealed that Bob Vander Plaats, a prominent evangelical leader in Iowa, received a $95,000 payment from the DeSantis campaign, a related super PAC, and a nonprofit organization prior to his endorsement of DeSantis.

Meanwhile, former President Trump has commented that many of DeSantis’s donors are shifting their support to him as the Florida governor’s presidential campaign struggles. Trump currently holds a substantial lead over DeSantis, both nationally and in key states such as Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina.
