Adams’ Approval Ratings Decline in Latest Marist Poll Amidst Federal Investigation

In the latest Marist poll, the standing of Eric Adams, the mayor of New York City, has plummeted. Although Adams has not been accused of any wrongdoing, 33 percent of voters in New York City believe that he “has done something illegal”, while 39 percent believe that he “has done something unethical, but not illegal”.

Only 18 percent of voters think that he “has done nothing wrong”. The poll also revealed that Governor Kathy Hochul’s approval ratings have also suffered. Only 43 percent of registered voters approve of the job she is doing, while 44 percent disapprove.

Lee Miringoff, the director of the poll, stated that “There’s no good news for New York’s major officials”. He added that Governor Hochul’s standing has deteriorated and that Mayor Adams is facing a more negative constituency.

The poll found that Adams was most popular with Black voters and older voters. As for Governor Hochul, only 39 percent of respondents believe that she is “changing the way things work in Albany for the better”, while 56 percent believe that she is not.

This represents a decline from October 2021, when Hochul received a favorable score of 46 percent to 39 percent on the same question.

The poll also highlighted the sentiment of New York voters regarding the overall quality of life in the state. A majority of 59 percent felt that it has “gotten worse” over the past year, while only 11 percent believed that it has “gotten better”.

The Siena College Research Institute had previously been the only major independent pollster to release numbers on New York’s state government in 2023.

The new Marist numbers confirm previous conclusions by Siena that Governor Hochul is struggling in the polls. A recent Siena survey found that she was viewed favorably by 40 percent of registered voters and unfavorably by 43 percent.

Marist also inquired about voters’ perception of Hochul’s political ideology. Among Democrats, 19 percent saw her as “too liberal”, 18 percent as “too conservative”, and 60 percent believed she was “about right”.

The majority of Republicans (69 percent) and unaffiliated voters (55 percent) considered her “too liberal”.

The poll also assessed the job performance of Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand. Forty-eight percent of registered voters rated Schumer’s performance as “excellent” or “good”, while 51 percent considered it “fair” or “poor”. Gillibrand received a 40 percent to 55 percent approval rating as she prepares for reelection next year.

President Joe Biden’s job approval rating in New York was also evaluated in the poll. Only 44 percent of New Yorkers approved of his performance, while 53 percent disapproved.

The poll was conducted from November 13 to 15 and surveyed 1,556 registered voters. The statewide numbers have a margin of error of 3.2 points, while the New York City numbers have a margin of error of 5.3 points.
