Ancient Hidden Bible Chapter Uncovered by Scientists After Centuries

Scientists have uncovered text from the Bible that had remained hidden for over 1,500 years.

Grigory Kessel, a historian at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, made this discovery.

He has published his findings in the prestigious New Testament Studies journal.

Utilizing ultraviolet photography, Kessel was able to discern the earlier text beneath three subsequent layers of inscriptions on a palimpsest.

This technique involved overwriting existing text because writing materials, such as parchment, were scarce.

However, the process meant that the original writings were obscured but not entirely erased underneath the new one.

Grigory’s study showed that there was an enhanced version of Chapter 12 in the Book of Matthew.

This new text dates back to the Old Syriac translations of the Bible.

Grigory’s finding sheds new light on the early stages of the Bible. It has several differences from the one that we see today.

For example, the standard Greek rendition of Matthew 12:1, which reads, “At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and his disciples became hungry and began to pick the heads of grain and eat,” contrasts with the Syriac translation unearthed by Kessel.

This newly discovered version elaborates, indicating the disciples “began to pick the heads of grain, rub them in their hands, and eat them,” offering a slightly different perspective on the biblical narrative.
