The U.S. government agreed to a $9.5 million settlement with a military family over a medical malpractice case at Tripler Army Medical Center. In November 2020, Julie Bond chose to undergo a laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass after struggling with post-pregnancy weight loss.

Bond’s surgery, intended to help her lose weight, was catastrophically mishandled, leading to severe complications. Beth Anderson, Bond’s mother, described her at a news conference saying she was, “A bold, vibrant, loving woman.”

During the surgery, a critical mistake was made. Bond’s small intestine was reattached backward.

This error resulted in a hernia, forcing Bond to undergo emergency surgery just three days later. In the emergency procedure, Bond’s lungs were damaged, leading to the development of life-threatening blood clots.

Critical Decisions

The malfunctioning of a very important clot-removal machine called for a critical decision that could spell life or death. Instead of transferring her, the doctors opted to administer her with high-risk medication.

The medication caused micro-hemorrhages in her brain. This then left  Bond in a vegetative state as a ventilator-dependent quadriplegic.

Bond was conscious yet trapped in her body. She was able only to blink and cry, and was completely dependent on machines.

Attorney Loretta Sheehan highlighted the immense loss. She expressed, “Donald has lost his wife, three children, their mother, and Beth a daughter.”
