Attorney General Garland Hopes for Release of More American Hostages in the Future

Attorney General Merrick Garland paid a visit to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New York City, where he discussed his office’s efforts to secure the safe return of American hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.

During the visit, Garland met with U.S. Attorney Damian Williams and other law enforcement leaders to address community issues. This visit is part of Garland’s plan to visit U.S. Attorney’s Offices across the nation.

Garland emphasized the urgency of the current global threat environment and expressed hope for the release of more hostages. He acknowledged the recent release of 40 hostages, including 4-year-old American Avigail Idan, and called for the safe return of others in the coming days.

Garland assured that the Victims Services Office of the Justice Department and corresponding offices within the FBI were ready to provide assistance to released Americans and their families.

The attorney general reaffirmed the department’s commitment to working with government partners to bring back all missing Americans, including those still held captive.

He emphasized the need for vigilance in the face of potential hate-driven violence and terrorism. Garland also highlighted the department’s focus on monitoring domestic activity influenced by the Israel-Hamas conflict and tensions in the Middle East.

Garland stated the increase in threats against Jewish, Muslim, and Arab communities since October 7 and mentioned the ongoing investigation into the attack on three Palestinian men in Vermont.

He condemned hate-fueled violence and assured that the ATF and FBI were investigating this incident as a potential hate crime. A suspect has been arrested in connection with the attack.

The attorney general emphasized that no person or community should live in fear of hate-fueled violence and promised to provide updates on the investigation in Vermont soon. Garland acknowledged the need to address various challenges, including combating violent crime. He provided examples of the office’s efforts to disrupt and dismantle fentanyl trafficking networks.
