Former President Donald Trump is on the verge of a major immigration policy win as the White House explores the reintroduction of some of his administration’s policies. This move aimed to reduce pressure on the southern border and unlock funding for Ukraine.

During the 2023 fiscal year, the number of suspected illegal migrants detained after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border surged to a record high of 2.4 million under President Joe Biden’s administration. This surge has prompted a re-evaluation of immigration policies.

Political scientists criticized the Biden administration’s immigration policies as “wholly inadequate.” The perceived shortcomings left President Biden vulnerable to Trump’s more hardline immigration stance.

These events are significant as there is less than a year to go before a possible face-off in the November 2024 presidential election.

The resurgence of some of Trump’s immigration policies might be a major win that he could claim during his speeches.

Thomas Gift, Center on U.S. Politics at University College London, remarked, “Biden’s capitulations reflect growing concern that the administration’s efforts to deal with the problem at the U.S.-Mexico border have been wholly inadequate.”

Progressive Base Unhappy With Biden

Tightening immigration restrictions, however, risked displeasing the progressive base of the Democratic Party. Democrats were already grappling with dissatisfaction over President Biden’s strong support for Israel during its conflict with Hamas.

Republican Demands for Concessions

House Republicans have demanded substantial concessions on immigration in exchange for passing a $106 billion package providing additional support to Ukraine and Israel, revealing the political trade-offs at play. Reports suggested President Biden was considering reviving a new version of Title 42, a measure initially introduced by the Trump administration in 2020 during the pandemic. This measure allowed the swift expulsion of migrants from countries with infectious diseases.

“Expedited Removal” Expansion

The White House was also reportedly contemplating expanding “expedited removal” for undocumented migrants who failed initial asylum screenings or didn’t request asylum without a full hearing, tightening existing regulations. Further proposed changes included holding migrants in detention while awaiting U.S. court dates, potentially lasting months or even years, marking a shift in detention practices.

Despite previous declarations, the Biden administration has also committed to building 20 miles of border wall in Starr County, Texas, with funding authorized under the Trump era. President Biden expressed doubts about the wall’s effectiveness earlier, sparking criticism from Mexican President López Obrador. Obrador remarked, “I understand there is strong pressure from extreme right-wing political groups in the United States.”

Democratic Cities Under Pressure

The immigration surge has put Democratic-controlled cities under intense strain. New York Mayor Eric Adams issued a warning, stating that he “would destroy New York City” without swift action.

This came after Texas Governor Greg Abbott organized buses to transport tens of thousands of migrants from his state to Democratic-run ‘sanctuary cities’.

Biden Staggeringly Vulnerable

Gift remarked, “Unless the White House can make some changes to show it recognizes the scale of the problem, it leaves Biden staggeringly vulnerable to Trump’s more hardline immigration rhetoric.”

Political Crossroads

Former President Donald Trump’s immigration policy resurgence and the potential reintroduction of his administration’s policies may create a lot of dissonance among the voters as far as the 2024 election is concerned.
