On Monday, President Joe Biden celebrated his 81st birthday while participating in the annual White House turkey pardon, a long-standing and slightly odd tradition in honor of Thanksgiving.

However, during the event, Biden attempted to make a joke about the rarity of receiving an invitation to the White House, and things took an awkward turn.

As the president stood surrounded by two large turkeys named Liberty and Bell, Biden remarked, “Just to get here, Liberty and Bell had to overcome tough odds and competition.

You could say even harder than getting a ticket to the Renaissance tour or … Britney’s tour. She’s down in—it’s kind of warm in Brazil right now.”

It is worth noting that Brazil is currently experiencing a severe heat wave. Biden’s remarks came shortly after a tragic incident at a Taylor Swift concert in Rio de Janeiro, where a 23-year-old girl lost her life.

While the cause of death has not been officially determined, it is likely that the extreme heat played a role. Local news sources reported that over 1,000 concertgoers fainted on the night of the concert, as the heat index rose to feel like 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

Swift has postponed her remaining shows in Rio, and the city’s public prosecutor has initiated a criminal investigation into the young woman’s death. This is likely the context behind Biden’s comment.

While it may be understandable that Biden confused Taylor Swift with Britney Spears, given the pop star’s recent presence in the media, it adds to existing concerns about the president’s age as he contemplates running for re-election in 2024. According to a recent poll, 74 percent of voters believe that Biden is too old to seek the presidency again.

Despite the mix-up, Biden went on to officially pardon the turkeys without further addressing the concert incident or Brazil’s extreme weather conditions.
