Bill Maher Criticizes Barbie Movie for Pushing “Man-Hating Zombie Lie”

Comedian Bill Maher has taken to social media to criticize the feminist-themed film “Barbie” for promoting what he calls a “preachy, man-hating zombie lie” about “the patriarchy.” Maher’s critique revolves around the movie’s plot, which features the character Barbie (played by Margot Robbie) confronting a board of directors portrayed as all-male.

In reality, Mattel’s board consists of 11 members, with five being women.

Maher argues that the film perpetuates a falsehood by promoting the idea of a male-dominated patriarchy when the real-life board makeup doesn’t entirely reflect that.

He emphasizes that while remnants of a patriarchal structure may still exist, the portrayal in the movie feels outdated for a setting in 2023.

He states, “Barbie is this kind of #ZombieLie… except there’s a Mattel board in real life, and it’s 7 men [6 in actuality] and 5 women. OK, not perfect even-steven, but not the way the board IN THE MOVIE – which takes place in 2023 – is portrayed. And not really any longer deserving of the word ‘patriarchy.’”

Maher concludes that the film’s depiction of gender roles feels out of touch with the attitudes and behaviors of women in the present day.

He notes that a woman he watched the movie with remarked, “I don’t know a single woman of any age who would act like that today.”.
