Billionaire Home Depot Co-founder Plans to Continue Funding Trump’s Campaign, Regardless of Conviction

In a recent interview, Republican mega-donor Bernie Marcus stated that he would continue to financially support Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential bid, even if the former president was convicted of a crime. However, Marcus clarified that he would not be one of Trump’s primary financial backers.

Marcus, who co-founded the popular home improvement retailer, Home Depot, had previously announced his support for Trump, who is currently the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican nomination. Trump is currently facing legal challenges, including state and federal charges related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.

Despite these legal troubles, Trump maintains his innocence and denies any wrongdoing. When asked about his continued support for Trump in the event of a conviction, Marcus responded, “I think so. Because I think it’s all trumped up.” Marcus, who had also supported Trump in his previous presidential campaigns, revealed that he had recently spoken with the former president, who was pleased with his support.

However, Marcus made it clear that he did not discuss Trump’s legal fees or legal problems during their conversation. In the 2020 election cycle, Marcus and his wife, Billi Wilma Marcus, were among the top individual Republican donors, contributing nearly $25 million to Republican campaigns.

The billionaire’s net worth is estimated to be around $8.8 billion, according to Forbes. Although Marcus confirmed his intention to support Trump in both the primary and general elections against Joe Biden in November 2024, he emphasized that he would not be a major financial contributor this time around. “Of course, I’m going to support him to some extent, but I’m not one of his big givers, that’s for sure,” Marcus stated.

Additionally, Marcus expressed his admiration for other Republican presidential candidates, including Nikki Haley, a former U.N. ambassador and South Carolina governor, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. However, he believed that neither of them would be able to surpass Trump in the nominating contest.

Marcus concluded by stating that he viewed Trump as a skilled problem solver who would positively impact the U.S. economy and exhibit strength in foreign policy, particularly in the Middle East.
