CNN Ratings See Major Decline – Drops Below Newsmax In Prime-Time Ratings

Once a dominant force in news broadcasting, CNN has now slipped to fourth place in prime-time viewership ratings.

This dip in viewership came after a brief surge driven by an appearance by former President Donald Trump during a town hall event.

CNN falls behind Newsmax in ratings

According to Forbes, CNN’s Friday prime-time audience averaged just 335,000 viewers, trailing behind Newsmax, which drew 357,000 viewers during the same time slot.

Fox News topped the ratings with a hefty 1.44 million viewers, and MSNBC came in second with a respectable audience of 1.084 million.

Delving deeper into the data, Forbes offered further insight:

Among viewers 25-54, the demographic group most valued by advertisers, CNN climbed to third place, with an average audience of 87,000 viewers. Fox News was first in the key demo with 109,000 viewers, followed by MSNBC (98,000 viewers). Newsmax was fourth with 45,000 viewers.

Each of CNN’s prime time hours trailed the competition on Newsmax Friday, with Anderson Cooper 360 delivering a total audience of 447,000 viewers at 8 p.m. ET, taking fourth place behind Fox News Channel’s Fox News Tonight (1.302 million viewers), MSNBC’s All In with Chris Hayes (1.076 million viewers), and Newsmax’s Eric Bolling (467,000 viewers). At 9 p.m. ET, FNC’s Hannity was first with 1.606 million viewers, followed by MSNBC’s Alex Wagner Tonight (1.207 million viewers), Newsmax’s Chris Plante (325,000 viewers), and CNN’s The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper (293,000 viewers).

Trump’s appearance boosted CNN ratings significantly

This drop in ratings comes just two days after the network experienced a significant boost thanks to Trump’s town hall event.

The former president’s bold and confrontational appearance drew ratings approximately five times greater than CNN’s typical 8 PM time slot viewership among the 25-54 demographic, as reported by Breitbart News.

During the town hall event, CNN reported 3.12 million total viewers and 703,000 viewers in the coveted 25-54 age group.

In the aftermath of the event, Trump was quick to highlight the ratings surge he brought to the network.

It was ‘a very smart thing’ that CNN did – Trump

“People are criticizing CNN for giving me a Forum to tell the TRUTH. I believe it was a very smart thing that they did, with Sky High Ratings that they haven’t seen in a very long time,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“It was by far the biggest Show of the night, the week, and the month!” he wrote.

Trump later expressed disappointment in CNN for not sufficiently acknowledging the positive impact of his appearance on the news network’s ratings.

Trump was ‘amazed’ that CNN was ‘traumatized’ by Townhall event

In an interview with The Messenger, he noted that he was “amazed to see” that the network was “traumatized” by the event.

In the same interview, published on Monday by Breitbart News, Trump shared some insights into his experience with CNN.

When asked about his takeaways from the event, Trump said he “was surprised by the level of hostility,” as he felt the network was attempting to regain lost viewership.
