DeSantis clarifies the meaning of ‘Woke’ after Trump claimed ‘half the people can’t’

Governor Ron DeSantis offered an explanation of the term “woke” only days after Donald Trump made a remark suggesting that the term remains misunderstood by many people.

Speaking with NBC News reporter Dasha Burns during a campaign trip in Iowa, DeSantis shared his view. “Look, we know what woke is; it’s a form of cultural Marxism,” he said.

He continued, “It’s about putting merit and achievement behind identity politics, and it’s basically a war on the truth. And as that has infected institutions, and it has corrupted institutions. So, you’ve got to be willing to fight the woke, we’ve done that in Florida, and we proudly consider ourselves the state where woke goes to die.”

Notably, only a couple of days prior, Trump had subtly critiqued the Florida governor at his own Iowa campaign event. He voiced his disdain for the term, frequently used in Republican conversations.

“I don’t like the term ‘woke’ because I hear, ‘Woke, woke, woke.’ It’s just a term they use; half the people can’t even define it; they don’t know what it is,” Trump said at the Westside Conservative Club in Urbandale, Iowa.

At the same event, Trump made remarks regarding transgender athletes, a contentious subject among conservatives, and referred to it as a “woke” concern before self-correcting. “I guess they define that as ‘woke,’ but that’s all woke. We have to bring common sense back to the country,” he commented.

Following this, during a town hall hosted by Fox News with Sean Hannity, Trump continued to use the term repeatedly. The former president frequently uses the term “woke” to critique his adversaries.

Donald Trump Jr. launches ‘non-woke’ magazine

It’s also worth noting that last month, his oldest son, Donald Trump Jr., revealed plans to launch a “non-woke men’s lifestyle magazine.”

Named Field Ethos, the magazine plans to highlight “a forgotten lifestyle to those who refuse to conform,” showcasing fishing and hunting stories penned by “old-school adventurers who make no apologies for who we are.”

Just like Trump, DeSantis frequently uses the term and has made a commitment that he would destroy the “woke mind virus” were he to become president.

In 2021, he passed the “Stop WOKE Act” in Florida, prohibiting college professors from teaching critical race theory in the state.
