Disney-Owned ABC News Features “Transgender” 3-Year-Old

ABC News, owned by Disney, recently published a profile focusing on a Texas family whose child, according to the parents, identified as transgender at the age of three. The family is planning to relocate due to what they view as anti-LGBTQ legislation in the state.

This coverage has added to the ongoing debate on the rights and treatment of transgender individuals, especially children, and the influence of media on these discussions.

The Story of ‘Elsa’

“When she was 3, one day, she told me, ‘I’m a girl person,’ a parent, identified as ‘Susan’ in the story, told ABC News. The child, now 7, is referred to as ‘Elsa,’ a pseudonym chosen for her safety. Elsa’s parents say she identified as a girl from an early age, leading them on her journey through gender identity – asking to wear dresses, change her name, and be referred to as their ‘daughter’.

ABC News’ coverage of this family’s story forms part of a broader narrative about transgender children and teenagers relocating from states with conservative stances on transgender issues, such as bans on transgender surgeries for minors.

From Texas to Colorado

In another example, ABC News reported on a family moving from Texas to Colorado in an attempt to protect their “gender nonconforming teenager.” Jamie, the teenager’s parent, stated in an interview, “Knowing that your governor and the top officials in your state literally don’t want you to exist – That’s a different kind of stress. It felt very genocidal there.”

The Debate on Medical Treatment for Transgender Children

The story raised questions about medical treatment and surgeries for transgender children, a topic of ongoing debate. Texas State Senator Bob Hall, a Republican, expressed opposition to such procedures. “We protect children against lots of things. We don’t let them smoke. We don’t let them drink. We don’t let them buy lottery cards… And so we are doing the right thing,” he stated.

ABC News and Disney’s Support of LGBTQ Narratives

Disney, which owns ABC News, has recently faced public disagreement with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and various parent groups due to its promotion of LGBTQ narratives in television programming. The company plans to host the world’s “largest LGBTQ+” conference in September 2023 and again in 2024. This decision has drawn criticism from Gov. DeSantis, who has targeted the company in recent times.

Gov. DeSantis has responded by dismissing a lawsuit against him filed by the Walt Disney Company and has expressed intent to limit Disney’s influence in Florida, including taking back control of the land utilized by the Disney World resort.
