Ex-National Rifle Association Executive Admits Fraud, Commits to Testifying in New York Civil Trial

Joshua Powell, former National Rifle Association’s (NRA) operations director, has settled with the New York attorney general’s office. The settlement addresses civil claims of fraud and abuse against Mr. Powell.

Powell’s Tenure at the NRA

Mr. Powell was an employee of the NRA from 2016 until January 2020. His role within the organization was significant during this period.

New York Attorney General Letitia James accused Mr. Powell of breaching his fiduciary duties. He allegedly misused charitable assets for personal and family benefits.

Mr. Powell admitted to the alleged misconduct. He agreed to pay $100,000 to the NRA and abstain from leadership roles in nonprofits.

Concurrent Resignation

The settlement coincided with Wayne LaPierre’s resignation from the NRA. LaPierre was the long-serving head of the organization.
