Experts Say Greg Abbott’s Immigration Actions Could End Up Benefiting President Biden

Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s recent clash with the federal government over immigration policy has drawn the attention of political scientists, who offer contrasting views on its potential implications.

While some experts believe Abbott’s stance could strengthen President Biden’s image as a decisive leader, others argue that it plays into a narrative of the GOP’s shift toward authoritarianism.

The conflict between Texas and the Biden administration escalated when, on January 22, the Supreme Court ruled that federal agents could remove razor wire placed along the Texas-Mexico border by the state’s National Guard, a move initiated by Governor Abbott to curb migrant flows.

Abbott responded vehemently, invoking Texas’s constitutional authority to protect itself against what he termed an “invasion.”

Twenty-five Republican governors expressed support for Abbott’s position.

Heath Brown, an associate professor of public policy, suggested to Newsweek that the confrontation might portray President Biden as a strong leader in the eyes of the public.

Flipping The Dynamic

He argued, “I suspect the recent stalemate in Congress on immigration reform will flip that dynamic:

Republicans are going to be seen as the inactive ones and Biden as the one who’s the eager problem-solver.

He has framed the proposal as a comprehensive effort to secure the border effectively, even granting him new emergency authority to address border issues.

The fate of this proposal remains uncertain.

Professor J. Wesley Leckrone, an expert in American politics, told Newsweek that Abbott’s actions could inadvertently benefit President Biden.

He contends, “I doubt there will a long-term cost to Biden. There may even be a net gain for him, particularly among swing voters.

Abbott taking matters into his own hands on immigration, talk in GOP circles of rejecting the Supreme Court’s ruling, and the optics of other red states sending National Guard troops to Texas all play into Biden’s narrative of Trump and the GOP’s march toward authoritarianism and the rejection of the rule of law.”

Trumpism Bigger Than Trump

He continued, “What Abbott is currently doing is a signal that Trumpism is bigger than Trump the individual.

Many leaders of the GOP have adopted his style of politics, Abbott is just the latest example.”

Differing Views on the Impact

While some experts see potential gains for Biden in the short and long term, Thomas Whalen, an associate professor at Boston University, disagreed.

In an interview with Newsweek, he described the immigration controversy as detrimental to Biden’s presidency.

Blame Either Way

He said, “Biden must feel as comfortable as Count Dracula in a tanning booth over this one.

It’s part of a clever, albeit cynical GOP political strategy to paint the president into a corner on immigration. [expletive deleted] if he does intercede, [expletive deleted] if he doesn’t.

Either way, he gets blamed for the border problem. Trump must be rubbing his stubby little hands together over this.”

Complex Political Landscape
