Florida’s Governor DeSantis Challenges California’s Newsom to Join Presidential Race

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) challenged his Californian counterpart Gavin Newsom (D) this week to make his bid for the presidency, urging him to “stop pussyfooting around”. The challenge came in response to Newsom’s recent statement that he is open to debating DeSantis, an apparent indicator of a possible national ambition.

During an interview with Sean Hannity that aired this week, Newsom declared that he would be “all in” for a debate with DeSantis. When Hannity suggested a two-hour debate, Newsom upped the ante, saying, “Make it three. I would do it one day’s notice with no notes. I look forward to that.”

When a reporter raised the question of Newsom’s challenge at a press conference in Fort Pierce, Florida, DeSantis hit back, pointing to the problems Newsom is facing in his home state. This is not the first time that Newsom has challenged DeSantis to a debate.

“It’s interesting. He’s [Newsom] got huge problems in his state. We all know that. You see it in San Francisco. You see it in L.A. You see it in the people fleeing,” DeSantis said. He further pointed out that California had been gaining population every year since its inception until Newsom became governor.

DeSantis criticized Newsom for overseeing a “massive exodus” from California and mentioned that people are not leaving the state due to its weather, which is considered among the best in the country, but because of its mismanagement and governance.

DeSantis added, “Yet with all those problems, he has a real serious fixation on the state of Florida. I mean, I think it’s just bizarre that he does that.”

He then issued his challenge to Newsom, saying, “What I would tell him is, you know what? Stop pussyfooting around. Are you going to throw your hat in the ring and challenge Joe? Are you going to get in and do it or are you just going to sit on the sidelines and chirp?”

Reports suggest that California lost nearly half a million people between April 2020 and July 2022. Furthermore, a report from the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) found that 61 percent of the state’s likely voters were experiencing financial hardship due to rising prices. One-third of the respondents were even considering leaving the state due to high housing costs.

This verbal spar between DeSantis and Newsom continues a broader feud between the two governors, who have previously locked horns over issues such as immigration and state governance. Their back-and-forth reflects the larger political divide between Republicans and Democrats at the state and national levels.
