Former First Lady Melania Trump Mourns Mother’s Funeral in Palm Beach

Under overcast skies with the threat of rain, the funeral service for Amalija Knavs, the mother of former first lady Melania Trump and grandmother to Barron Trump, took place at the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach on Thursday morning.

The solemn event was attended by the Trump family, including former President Donald Trump, as well as Republican Senators Rick Scott and Lindsey Graham.

The funeral service for Amalija Knavs began at approximately 10 a.m., marking a significant gathering of mourners. Among those in attendance were Melania Trump, her father Viktor Knavs, Barron Trump, and former President Donald Trump. The Rev. Tim Schenck, rector of Bethesda, greeted the casket at the church’s west-facing entrance.

Trump Family’s Arrival

The Trump family arrived at the church in a procession of black SUVs, with Secret Service agents and Palm Beach police accompanying the vehicles from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club, located approximately 2.5 miles south of the church.

Amalija Knavs: A Remembrance

Amalija Knavs, whose cooking was credited by former President Trump for contributing to Barron Trump’s remarkable height of 6 feet, 7 inches, passed away on January 9 at the age of 78. Her casket was transported to the church in a black Cadillac hearse, arriving for the funeral service.

It remains undisclosed where Amalija Knavs will be laid to rest, adding an element of mystery to the proceedings.

Donald, Melania, and Barron Trump were accompanied at the church by friends and family, including Donald Trump’s daughters Ivanka and Tiffany, along with their spouses Jared Kushner and Michael Boulos.

Donald Trump’s sons, Don Jr. and Eric, were also present with their partners Kimberly Guilfoyle and Lara Trump. Republican Senators Rick Scott of Florida and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina were among the dignitaries attending the service.

While family members did not engage with the media, Melania Trump shared her thoughts on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) following her mother’s passing. In her message, she expressed deep sadness and described her mother as a strong woman who embodied grace, warmth, and dignity.

A Moving Farewell

Following the funeral service, the casket, adorned with white flowers, was accompanied back to the hearse by a procession of clergy from the church. The lead priest carried incense, with Schenck following behind.

The Trump family, along with Viktor Knavs, followed the casket as it was placed in the hearse.

Photographers and members of the press documented the moment as pallbearers lifted the casket into the hearse. The Trump family, including Viktor Knavs, stood in a row along South Ocean Boulevard, while photographers captured the scene.

With the hearse sealed, Schenck conversed with each of the four family members before leading the clergy back toward the church. Melania Trump and her father entered the black SUV awaiting them, followed by Donald and Barron Trump in the SUV behind.

As the former president assisted his wife into the car, it appeared he said, “I’m going to ride with our son.”

After the motorcade departed, and normal traffic resumed along South Ocean Boulevard, the bells of Bethesda’s church chimed, marking the conclusion of a solemn day of remembrance and farewell.
