Former President Jimmy Carter Pays Tribute to Late Wife Rosalynn at Memorial Service

Former President Jimmy Carter showed his love and respect for his late wife, Rosalynn Carter, by attending her memorial service in their home state of Georgia. The ceremony took place on November 28 at the Glenn Memorial Church at Emory University in Atlanta.

Photographs captured the 99-year-old Jimmy sitting in a wheelchair during the service, wearing a black suit and tie with a white dress shirt. He had draped a blanket adorned with Rosalynn’s face over himself. The blanket also featured the family’s surname and their hometown of Plains, Georgia.

Many esteemed guests were present at the service, including former presidents and first ladies such as Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, Michelle Obama, and Melania Trump.

President Joe Biden, First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff also attended. Country stars Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, who were close friends of Rosalynn, performed during the memorial. Rosalynn’s funeral will be held at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains on November 29.

Rosalynn, aged 96, passed away just over a week before the memorial service. In a statement released by the Carter Center, it was announced, “Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, a passionate advocate for mental health, caregiving, and women’s rights, died peacefully on Sunday, November 19, at 2:10 p.m. at her residence in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by her family.”

Jimmy expressed the impact his wife had on his life, stating, “She was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished. She provided me with wise guidance and encouragement whenever I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I knew I had someone who loved and supported me.”

Rosalynn and Jimmy were married for 77 years and have four children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. Two days before Rosalynn’s passing, the Carter Center announced that she had entered hospice care due to her battle with dementia.

“She and President Carter are spending time together with their family,” the organization reported on November 17. In February, Jimmy himself had entered hospice care after a series of brief hospital stays.

Throughout her life, Rosalynn advocated for mental health awareness and care. In a statement released in May, the Carter family highlighted the importance of addressing the stigma surrounding dementia.

They stated, “One in 10 older Americans have dementia, a condition that affects overall mental health. We acknowledge, as she did more than half a century ago, that stigma often acts as a barrier and prevents individuals and their families from seeking the much-needed support.

We hope that sharing our family’s news will encourage crucial conversations within households and doctor’s offices all across the nation.”

Rosalynn and Jimmy established the Carter Center non-profit organization in 1982 and worked diligently to construct and repair over 4,000 residences for Habitat for Humanity.
