Google has confirmed the worldwide job reductions in a statement released to multiple media outlets. This announcement marks a major shift in the company’s operational approach.

A Google spokesperson stated, “Throughout the second half of 2023, our teams strived for efficiency and better functionality.” They also emphasized realigning resources to prioritize major product developments.

The layoffs impact employees in diverse areas, including digital assistant and augmented reality (AR) sectors. Those working on internal software tools, engineering, and the Google Voice Assistant program are also affected.

Courtenay Mencini, a Google spokeswoman, announced that a few hundred roles are being eliminated, particularly impacting the 1P AR Hardware team. Despite these cuts, Google remains dedicated to its AR initiatives.
