Governor Reynolds Mobilizes Iowa State Government After School Shooting

One week ahead of the 2024 Iowa Caucus, scheduled for January 15, Governor Kim Reynolds of Iowa has taken decisive action in response to the tragic mass shooting at Perry High School on January 4.

In her proclamation, Governor Reynolds states that she is “unleashing the full power of state government” to aid Perry High School, the Perry community, and Dallas County in their recovery from the devastating incident.

Governor Reynolds has signed a state of disaster emergency proclamation, which outlines her commitment to assisting the affected community.

Tragic Event

The tragic shooting resulted in the loss of one student’s life and left seven students and staff members injured, before the 17-year-old shooter, a student at the high school, died from a self-inflicted gunshot.

Authorizing Comprehensive State Resources

Reynolds’s proclamation empowers the utilization and deployment of all available state resources, supplies, equipment, and materials. This support is aimed at aiding Dallas County and the Perry Community as they respond to and recover from the senseless tragedy that unfolded at Perry High School on January 4.

The disaster emergency proclamation is set to remain in effect for 30 days, expiring on February 7, 2024. During this period, the state government will remain actively engaged in the recovery efforts.

Government Agencies in Action

Several government agencies have been actively involved in assisting the community since the shooting took place on January 4. The Department of Public Safety, the Department of Education, the Department of Health and Human Services, and other state entities have been lending their support.

Activation of Emergency Authorities

Governor Reynolds’s proclamation activates the emergency authorities of all state agencies. This measure ensures enhanced coordination at the State Emergency Operations Center and eliminates administrative barriers, facilitating the efficient provision of state resources and assistance in the coming days and weeks.

Reynolds’ Previous Constitutional Carry Bill

In 2021, Governor Reynolds signed into law a “constitutional carry” bill, allowing individuals to purchase and carry handguns without a permit.

Handguns Used By Perry School Shooter

It’s noteworthy that the Perry High School shooter was armed with two firearms—a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun. The means by which the shooter obtained these weapons remain undisclosed. (Iowa law requires individuals to be 18 or older to purchase a rifle or shotgun.)

Ongoing Investigation

The Iowa Department of Public Safety, on January 5, the day after the shooting, announced that the investigation is still ongoing. Once the investigation is concluded, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) will forward its investigative report to the Dallas County Attorney’s Office.

The County Attorney’s Office will then determine any additional course of action, if necessary, in response to the tragic incident at Perry High School.
