Hamas Claims Responsibility for Fatal Shooting at Jerusalem Bus Stop

Hamas has announced that the individuals responsible for the fatal shooting at a Jerusalem bus stop on Thursday were members of its military group, Al-Qassam Brigades. According to authorities, seven people were also injured in the attack, which was carried out by two brothers identified by Hamas.

This incident occurred amidst an ongoing truce between Israel and Hamas, which has seen a cessation of hostilities and the exchange of prisoners. The truce was extended for an additional day on Thursday, as negotiations continue to prolong it further.

The attackers themselves were killed by two soldiers and a civilian, confirmed Jerusalem District Commander Doron Turgeman. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene while two others succumbed to their injuries at Shaare Zedek hospital.

Israeli police provided an update stating that the attackers opened fire towards civilians at the bus station around 7:40 a.m. local time. The area has been cordoned off, and authorities are conducting an additional search to exclude the possibility of any other suspects.

Hamas has praised the attack, claiming it was in direct response to what they perceive as Israeli forces’ atrocities, such as the “brutal massacres” in the Gaza Strip and the killing of children in Jenin.

They also cited ongoing violations at the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the restriction of access for worshippers. Hamas issued a warning to Israel, stating that similar attacks would occur in every city, village, street, and alley.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in response to the attack, reiterated his determination to “eliminate Hamas.” Following a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Netanyahu emphasized that this attack further demonstrates the nature of Hamas as a threat. He referred to previous incidents, such as the “terrible massacre” on October 7th, which he attributed to Hamas.
