In response to wildfires exacerbated by the winds of Hurricane Dora, Hawaii’s Lt.
Gov. Sylvia Luke, acting on behalf of Gov. Josh Green, has issued an emergency proclamation.
This move activates the Hawaii National Guard and allows the utilization of additional resources to assist emergency responders in tackling the spreading wildfires.

The fires have consumed significant acreage in both Hawaii and Maui counties, affecting areas like North Kohala, South Kohala, Kula, and Lahaina.
Evacuations have been carried out, schools and roads closed, and around 13,000 customers in Maui are facing power outages.
However, the wildfires have proven difficult to control due to strong wind gusts from Hurricane Dora.

These gusts have impeded efforts like helicopter water drops and accurate fire size assessment.
Despite the challenges, emergency responders are collaborating with federal and state partners to combat the situation and safeguard affected communities.
With high wind and red flag warnings indicating dangerous fire weather conditions, the emergency proclamation is expected to remain in effect until August 15. This measure ensures vital support and resources for managing the ongoing wildfire crisis..
