Hunter Biden Voluntarily Offers to Testify Publicly in Congressional Inquiry

Hunter Biden, the son of President Biden, has expressed his willingness to testify before Congress regarding the ongoing investigation conducted by House Republicans into his family.

However, he insists on testifying only in a public hearing to prevent any potential manipulation or selective leaks of his statements by Republicans. In a letter addressed to Congress, his attorney, Abbe D. Lowell, criticized the partisan nature of the Republican inquiry and accused Representative James R. Comer of distorting facts and misleading the public through closed-door sessions.

Lowell proposed that Hunter Biden appear at a public hearing on December 13, the same date set by Republicans for his closed-door interview, or any other date in December that can be arranged.

He emphasized the importance of transparency, stating, “If, as you claim, your efforts are important and involve issues that Americans should know about, then let the light shine on these proceedings.”

However, Representative Comer swiftly rejected the offer, insisting that Hunter Biden should first provide a closed-door testimony to the oversight panel. He did, however, acknowledge that Mr. Biden could potentially testify in a public setting at a later date.

In response, Comer criticized Hunter Biden, stating, “Hunter Biden is trying to play by his own rules instead of following the rules required of everyone else.”

If Hunter Biden decides to testify publicly in the House under oath, there would be both criminal and political risks involved.

He is currently under investigation by a special counsel for federal criminal charges and is facing indictment for providing false information about his drug use on a federal form. Any testimony he provides to Congress could potentially be used against him.

Hunter Biden has also been involved in activities that could be politically damaging to President Biden’s reelection campaign if they receive additional attention.

These activities include leveraging his father’s status for personal gain, accepting expensive gifts from foreign interests, failing to pay taxes on time, and engaging in drug use and prostitution.

Nevertheless, sources close to Hunter Biden indicate that his offer to testify publicly was made to minimize these risks. By testifying in public, he hopes to prevent manipulation of his words through selective leaks and demonstrate that he has nothing to hide.

The resolution of this dispute is currently uncertain, but it may result in a prolonged standoff between Hunter Biden and the committee. House Republicans have been striving for months to build an impeachment case against President Biden, alleging that he corruptly profited from his family’s overseas business dealings and accepted bribes.

However, they have thus far been unable to provide substantial evidence to support these claims. Their investigation has primarily centered around Hunter Biden’s work for companies and partners in Ukraine, China, and other countries.

Last month, Republicans issued subpoenas demanding testimony from both Hunter and James Biden, the president’s brother.

Representative Comer also requested transcribed interviews with other family members, including Sara Biden, James Biden’s wife; Hallie Biden, the widow of Beau Biden, the president’s older son; Elizabeth Secundy, Hallie Biden’s sister; Melissa Cohen, who is married to Hunter Biden; and Tony Bobulinski, a former associate of Hunter Biden’s who has accused the Bidens of wrongdoing.

Bank records of James and Hunter Biden and their associates have also been subpoenaed, resulting in the release of two checks that show payments totaling $240,000 from James and Sara Biden to President Biden in 2017 and 2018.

Representative Comer portrayed this as evidence of the family “laundering China money,” despite President Biden not being in office during those years. However, a lawyer for James Biden dismissed these claims as misleading, asserting that the checks were meant to reimburse loans given by James to his brother.

Representative Jamie Raskin, the senior Democrat on the oversight panel, considers the rejection of Hunter Biden’s offer to testify publicly as a humiliating moment for Republicans and a further indication of their inability to substantiate their allegations against the Bidens.

Raskin emphasized that the evidence has repeatedly shown President Biden’s innocence and his lack of involvement in any impeachable offenses. He concluded by stating, “What the Republicans fear most is sunlight and the truth.”
