Israel Launches Offensive in Gaza Strip Following Breakdown of Ceasefire with Hamas

A truce between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip came to an end on Friday, resulting in the resumption of hostilities. Both sides blamed each other for the collapse of the ceasefire, which had allowed for the exchange of hostages and prisoners.

Israel’s Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, confirmed that the Israeli military had launched 200 strikes since the fighting resumed.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel’s war aims include freeing hostages, eliminating Hamas, and ensuring the safety of Israeli residents. Despite international pressure, Israeli leaders had made it clear that the offensive would continue even if the truce persisted.

The halt in fighting had given Gaza’s 2.2 million people a temporary respite from Israeli strikes that killed over 13,000 people, according to Gaza health authorities. The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, expressed regret over the resumption of hostilities and called for a true humanitarian ceasefire.

Mediators from Qatar had tried to extend the truce, but disagreements between Israel and Hamas, including the definition of soldiers versus civilians and the number of Palestinian prisoners Israel would release, remained unresolved.

Hamas proposed various exchanges involving hostages and prisoners, but Israel rejected all offers. The breakdown of the ceasefire led to renewed rocket attacks from Gaza into central Israel, resulting in casualties on both sides.
