The New York Times reported on Wednesday that Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, who previously served as trusted advisers and confidantes to former President Donald Trump during his administration, have been subpoenaed by the special counsel in charge of investigating Mr. Trump.
In Hot Water
Despite being the ex-president’s daughter and son-in-law, respectively, they are now subjects of the investigation.
Trump Investigation
Last year, Attorney General Merrick Garland nominated Jack Smith to lead the investigation, in light of Mr. Trump’s decision to seek the presidency once again and President Joe Biden’s preparation to run for re-election.
Pence Subpoenaed
As part of the investigation, Mr. Smith has already subpoenaed former Vice President Mike Pence, who has legally challenged the subpoena, citing his role as president of the Senate during the January 6th riot, as per the US Constitution.
Ivanka and Her Husband’s Role
Ivanka Trump and Kushner held senior White House advisor positions during the former presidency.
Prior Investigations into the Couple
Both individuals provided testimony to the select House committee which investigated the Capitol riot, where a mob of Trump supporters were fueled by the ex-president’s false claims of election fraud leading to his defeat by Biden.
Jack Smith is on the Case
In addition to this investigation, Jack Smith is also leading a criminal probe into former President Trump’s removal of White House records when he left office. These records were then shipped to the ex-president’s Mar-a-Lago club located in Palm Beach, Florida, with many of them marked as classified.
