Special Counsel Jack Smith has strongly objected to Donald Trump’s lawyers’ request for a delay in filing documents in the Florida classified documents case due to the upcoming Stormy Daniels trial in New York.

Donald Trump requested a 10-day extension for filing documents in Florida, citing preparation needs for the Daniels case beginning on March 25.

Judge Aileen Cannon granted this extension, allowing filings on or before March 24.

The documents in the Florida case were originally due on March 14, but Cris Kise, Trump’s lawyer, successfully argued that they needed more time because they were preparing for two cases simultaneously.

Trump faces 40 federal charges related to handling sensitive materials at his Mar-a-Lago estate, accused of obstructing federal efforts to retrieve them.

He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Smith’s Counterargument

Smith’s team argued that Trump has known the Stormy Daniels trial date since 2022, suggesting his request for delay is a last-minute tactic.

“Only now, on the eve of the reply deadline, does the defense complain that it needs more time — mostly based on circumstances about which they have been aware throughout the pendency of their motions,” stated attorneys Jay Bratt and David Harbach.

Smith accuses Trump of delaying the classified documents case, possibly until after the presidential election, in hopes that the case can be dropped if he is re-elected.

Clash Causes

However, Kise claims the scheduling clash is partly due to “the discovery violations and strategic scheduling demands of the Special Counsel’s Office that have prejudiced President Trump in multiple respects.”

Trump is charged with 34 counts over allegedly directing payments to silence Stormy Daniels about an affair, listing them as “legal fees.”

Trump has also pleaded not guilty in this case as well.
