Kamala Harris’s ‘reduce population’ gafe ignites conspiracy theories and causes outrage

A misstep by Vice President Kamala Harris during a recent speech, where she mistakenly referred to a plan to “reduce population,” has been fervently taken up by conservative leaders as evidence of a conspiracy theory.

Harris gave a speech last Friday at Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland. She discussed the Democrats’ strategies to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and attain net-zero emissions by 2050.

Kamala Harris mistakes ‘pollution for ‘population’

Harris stated, “When we invest in clean energy and electric vehicles and reduce population, more of our children can breathe clean air and drink clean water.”

However, no evidence exists that Harris intended to propose a population reduction plan to counter climate change or achieve any political aims.

Instead, she seemed to have just misspoken. The official White House transcript of the speech corrects the word “population” with “pollution,” which Harris meant to say.

Right-wing figures react to Harris’ misstatement

Several right-wing figures capitalized on Harris’s error, suggesting she advocated for a decrease in global population.

“Are you the population she wants to reduce?” tweeted Kentucky Republican congressman Thomas Massie, sharing a clip of Harris’ statement.

Throughout her term, Harris has consistently polled lower than President Joe Biden. Political experts predict her scrutiny to intensify as the running mate for the oldest person ever to seek a second presidential term in 2024.

Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene questioned Harris’s statement, “‘Reduce population’ @VP, what do you mean by reduce population? Abortion? Assisted suicide? Or what means are you suggesting to reduce population in order to help public health?”

Critics pounce on Harris’s ‘population comment

Missouri Senator Eric Schmitt also criticized Harris: “VP Kamala Harris says the quiet part out loud regarding her and other climate alarmists very anti-human ideology and their desire to ‘reduce population.'”

Right-wing influencer Rogan O’Handley, under his DC Draino Twitter handle, proclaimed, “Kamala just said that ‘reducing population’ is a goal of the climate change movement. They aren’t hiding it anymore. YOU are the carbon they want to eliminate True evil.”

Further reactions to Harris’s ‘population’ statement

Fox News host Jesse Watters noted, “What she just said, you’re not supposed to say if you’re a liberal. They’ve been saying this for a long time; they need to reduce population to heal the planet.”

Responding to the commentary, conservative pundit Tomi Lahren stated, “This is another one of those Republican conspiracy theories you’ve said for so long that Democrats want to reduce the population, and then she just flat out said it.”

Harris’s speaking gaffes: AI explanation, rural internet access

Harris has faced previous public speaking mishaps, with a recent video of her grappling to articulate the concept of Artificial Intelligence gaining traction on social media.

During a round table, she said, “I think the first part of this issue that should be articulated is AI is kind of a fancy thing; first of all, it’s two letters, it means artificial intelligence but ultimately what it is is it’s about machine learning.”

She also gave confusing remarks during a speech on expanding internet access to rural America alongside Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards in May 2022.
