Latino Radio Station Fights Against Political Misinformation in Arizona

In Arizona, a prominent battleground state, Radio Campesina has emerged as a significant force in combatting misinformation and disinformation. This Spanish-language radio station, part of a network of eight stations in California, Arizona, and Nevada, is dedicated to dispelling doubts about voting and the election process leading up to the 2024 presidential election.

Listeners of Radio Campesina’s morning show, “Punto de Vista” (“Point of View”), engage in conversations with hosts who address their concerns and provide accurate information.

One prevalent question that arose was whether mailing in a ballot would result in a lost vote. The hosts reassured the caller that ballots can be tracked, counteracting the doubts that emerged after the 2020 election, as some Republicans began to question the safety of mail-in voting following former President Donald Trump’s loss.

Radio Campesina holds a significant role within the Latino community, stemming from a relationship that spans decades. Founded in 1983 by labor activist Cesar Chavez, the network serves the needs of Spanish-speaking individuals, providing news related to politics, workers’ rights, and immigration.

The stations, owned by the Cesar Chavez Foundation, reach over 750,000 weekly listeners. Radio remains a powerful medium for reaching Latino audiences, surpassing other platforms in terms of engagement, as 94% of Latinos over 18 listen to the radio on a monthly basis, according to a recent Nielsen report.

In Arizona, Latinos who are eligible to vote constitute almost a quarter of the population. This community has faced complex political challenges, including racial profiling by former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the controversial SB 1070 law, which led to lawsuits due to alleged unfair targeting of Hispanics.

Given this history, the Latino electorate in Arizona recognizes the significance of their participation in elections.

To counter misinformation surrounding the 2020 election and voting processes, Radio Campesina partnered with Mi Familia Vota for a rodeo night. The event aimed to register new voters and capture testimonials from voters, debunking myths about election fraud.

Conversations held during the event highlighted lingering misinformation around the 2020 election, but Radio Campesina’s presence provided an opportunity to address these concerns and dispel false narratives.

Radio Campesina’s long-standing presence within the community is crucial, as Spanish-language misinformation tends to remain online for extended periods compared to English misinformation, according to various studies and organizations focused on the issue.

Recognizing the impact of the Latino vote, President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign understands the importance of radio outreach. The campaign recently launched Spanish-language radio ads on Radio Campesina and other Spanish-language stations in Arizona and Nevada, marking the earliest-ever investment in Latino radio for a Democratic re-election effort.

Furthermore, Biden participated in an interview with Radio Campesina, discussing his plans for the economy, comprehensive immigration reform, and support for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program recipients. By demonstrating his connection with the Latino community, Biden aims to engage listeners and build trust.
