Low-Speed Collision Derails Train, Causes Injuries, and Disrupts Services in Manhattan Subway

On Thursday, chaos ensued in the heart of Manhattan as a New York City subway train derailed, colliding with another train at a low speed. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. on the Upper West Side, near the 96th Street station. The collision involved a 1 train, carrying approximately 300 passengers, and an out-of-service Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) train, housing four workers.

Transit officials and police, present at the scene, defined the situation as a “derailment,” signifying that at least one wheel of a train had left the track.

According to Richard Davey, the president of New York City Transit for the MTA, the out-of-service train had become stuck because someone had pulled several emergency stop cords. The workers on board were tasked with resetting the brake cords, a routine procedure in such situations.

“Thankfully there were no serious injuries,” Davey stated during a news conference. “Obviously two trains should not be bumping into one another. We are going to get to the bottom of that.”

In response to the incident, firefighters were engaged in the evacuation of passengers from both the in-service train involved in the collision and another train that was not directly impacted but had to halt in the tunnel due to the collision.
