McCarthy’s Visit to Mar-a-Lago Was Motivated by Concerns for Trump’s Well-Being, Liz Cheney Reveals

Former Wyoming GOP Rep. Liz Cheney sheds light on Kevin McCarthy’s controversial visit to Mar-a-Lago in her upcoming book titled “Oath and Honor.” According to Cheney, McCarthy’s decision to visit the South Florida resort so soon after the January 6 attack on the US Capitol was driven by concerns about former President Donald Trump’s emotional state.

Cheney recounts her conversation with McCarthy, questioning his trip to Mar-a-Lago. “Mar-a-Lago? What the hell, Kevin?” she asked. McCarthy responded by expressing worry over Trump’s lack of appetite and shared that he was asked to see the former president. “Yeah, he’s really depressed,” McCarthy explained to Cheney.

Following the release of these details, representatives for McCarthy and the publisher of Cheney’s book have yet to provide any comments or response. McCarthy himself has defended his decision, emphasizing that the meeting was an attempt to unite the Republican Party before the 2022 midterms.

However, McCarthy’s visit faced significant backlash from both political allies and adversaries. Other Republicans, as described by Cheney in her book, were “angry and disgusted” by McCarthy’s actions.

Some even mocked him, circulating a photo of McCarthy with Trump alongside a clip from the movie Jerry Maguire, sarcastically alluding to a line where a character says, “You.. complete… me.”

The timing of McCarthy’s visit is especially notable, as it occurred while Republicans were strategizing to regain control of the House. McCarthy’s position as the next speaker seemed probable, given the party’s slim majority in the 2022 elections.

However, he faced opposition from conservative hardliners, resulting in multiple rounds of voting before securing the speakership.

McCarthy’s tenure as speaker, though, was short-lived. In October, he was ousted from the position due to his inability to appease far-right Republicans pushing for substantial budget cuts. Trump, who initially took credit for McCarthy’s ascent, was involved in praising the California lawmaker for his role.

Cheney, on the other hand, took a distinct path from McCarthy after January 6. She clashed with Trump and served as the vice chair of the prominent House committee investigating the Capitol attack. While she sought reelection in 2022, Cheney was defeated in the Wyoming GOP primary by Representative Harriet Hageman.

The release of “Oath and Honor” is scheduled for December 5th.
