  7. Mike Johnson’s Historic Betrayal...

Mike Johnson’s Historic Betrayal Has Left Conservatives Deeply Angry With Him, Show Rating Polls

In what many conservatives view as a stark betrayal, House Speaker Mike Johnson’s approval ratings among Republicans have plummeted dramatically, reflecting deep dissatisfaction with his leadership.

Conversely, Johnson’s favorability has surged among Democrats following his controversial decision to prioritize foreign aid over domestic policy, demonstrating a clear realignment of political support.

House Speaker Mike Johnson faces mounting pressure as a historic vote looms in the House of Representatives to potentially strip him of his leadership role.

This comes after Johnson’s perceived capitulation to Democrat agendas, alienating his base while endearing himself to the opposition.

The controversy ignited when Johnson backed a foreign aid package that allocated billions to Ukraine, sidelining promised border security enhancements.

This move, seen as a betrayal to his conservative promises, has led to an outcry among Republican voters and a noticeable shift in his support base.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has been a vocal critic of Johnson’s actions, leading the charge with a resolution to vacate his position as Speaker.

This bold move has underscored the growing rift within the Republican Party, as traditional conservatives seek to reclaim their influence over party direction.

Recent polls, including those from the Economist/YouGov, have starkly illustrated Johnson’s shifting support demographics.

Back in mid-April, before Johnson handed operational control of the House chamber to Democrats through the foreign aid package benefiting Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy, his overall favorability rating was already net underwater.

At that time, 26% of respondents approved of his job performance, while 35% disapproved.

A significant 39% remained uncertain about their opinion of Johnson.

However, when examining the demographic breakdown, the divide was stark.

Among Trump voters, Johnson enjoyed a 50% approval rate and an 18% disapproval rate, with 32% undecided.

Among Republicans, his approval stood at 44%, disapproval at 22%, and uncertainty at 34%.

In contrast, among Biden voters, Johnson’s approval was only 12%, with a staggering 61% disapproval, and 27% unsure.

Among Democrats, his approval was slightly higher at 14%, but disapproval remained significant at 52%, with 34% undecided.

Fast forward one week, and Johnson’s numbers underwent a dramatic transformation.

Amid his betrayal of a previous promise not to pass Ukraine aid without addressing border security in the United States, the next Economist/YouGov poll (conducted from April 21 to April 23) revealed a 31% approval rating for Johnson — a 6% increase.

However, his overall disapproval surged to 42%, a 7% rise, while 27% remained undecided.

The key factors behind this shift were a substantial drop in support among Republicans and Trump voters, coupled with a significant surge in approval from Democrats rallying to his defense

As Johnson’s policies align more closely with Democratic priorities, leaders like House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have expressed support for Johnson, viewing his leadership as beneficial to their legislative goals.

This unusual alliance has further alienated conservative constituents who feel betrayed by Johnson’s pivot away from GOP core values.

Johnson’s reversal on key policy pledges, particularly border security, has not only eroded his standing among loyal Republicans but has also provided Democrats with political leverage against him.

His commitment to foreign aid over national security has been a point of particular contention, highlighting a failure to adhere to his campaign assurances.

Johnson’s precarious position as Speaker, supported by Democrats and opposed by an increasing number of Republicans, poses significant questions about the functionality and unity of Congress under his leadership.

His ability to govern effectively is being called into question as he navigates this highly partisan landscape.

In response to the backlash, Johnson has defended his decisions as being in the best interest of the country, citing the need for a functioning Congress that transcends partisan politics.

However, his justifications have done little to quell the dissent within his party, as many Republicans view his actions as a departure from conservative principles.

As the vote to determine Johnson’s fate approaches, the political dynamics within the House reflect a broader national debate about the direction of the Republican Party and its leadership.

Whether Johnson can mend fences with his base or will continue to rely on Democratic support remains a pivotal question for his political future.

Speaker Mike Johnson’s tenure has become a flashpoint for partisan tensions in Washington, exemplifying the challenges of leading a divided Congress.

As he faces potential ousting, the repercussions of his decisions will likely resonate beyond Capitol Hill, influencing GOP strategies and alignments in the lead-up to the next electoral cycle.
