Monroe County DA Faces Investigation After Traffic Stop Incident in Western New York

In a startling incident captured on police bodycam, Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley engaged in a heated confrontation with a police officer after being stopped for speeding in upstate New York.

The incident, which has now led to a formal investigation, occurred on April 22 and came under scrutiny when Gov. Kathy Hochul referred it to the State Commission on Prosecutorial Conduct.

The confrontation began when Officer Cameron Crisafulli approached Doorley’s garage, where she had parked after driving 55 mph in a 35 mph zone.

The bodycam footage, released by NBC affiliate WHEC of Rochester, shows Crisafulli questioning why Doorley did not stop despite his activated lights and sirens.

Doorley responded that she did not realize he was attempting to pull her over, suggesting other vehicles were also on the road.

Throughout the 26-minute encounter, Doorley appeared agitated and repeatedly told the officer to “leave me alone,” while asserting her position as the District Attorney of Monroe County.

At one point, she tried to enter her home, despite Crisafulli’s orders to stay outside, leading to further escalation.

“I understand the law better than you. Get out of my f***ing house,” she retorted during one of several tense exchanges.

Doorley also made several calls during the stop, including one to Webster Police Chief Dennis Kohlmeier, which did not seem to alleviate the situation.

The officer’s bodycam captured her saying, “You’re being an a**hole. I am the DA of Monroe County.”

After additional officers arrived, including a supervisor, Crisafulli issued a speeding ticket to Doorley.

Despite the contentious interactions, the officer remained professional, expressing regret over how the situation escalated and acknowledging Doorley’s challenging day dealing with multiple homicides.

Following the incident, Doorley publicly apologized for her behavior, acknowledging her actions were wrong and taking full responsibility.

“I fell short of the values I’ve held for my entire 33-year career. I didn’t treat this officer with the respect that he deserved,” she said in a statement.

Doorley admitted to having a difficult day, including dealing with family health issues, but recognized that was no excuse for her conduct.

Gov. Hochul condemned the behavior, emphasizing that it contradicted Doorley’s responsibilities as a District Attorney and compromised her ability to enforce the law fairly.

In response, Doorley has pledged to undergo ethics training and has self-reported the incident for further review by a different District Attorney’s office and the grievance committee.

This incident has stirred discussions about the expectations and behaviors of public officials, especially those tasked with upholding the law.

As the investigation continues, the community and legal professionals are watching closely to see how this situation will be resolved and what measures will be taken to prevent such occurrences in the future.

Doorley’s case is a stark reminder of the pressures faced by those in high-stakes legal positions and the importance of maintaining professionalism under stress.
