Mossad Chief Vows Retaliation Against Hamas Following Beirut Strike

The chief of Israel’s Mossad, David Barnea, vowed to track down every Hamas member involved in the Oct. 7 attack on Israel. This pledge followed the killing of Saleh Arouri, a senior Hamas figure, in a Beirut strike suspected to be Israeli-led.

Arouri, the deputy head of Hamas, was killed in Beirut, marking a significant blow to the group. His death, in Hezbollah’s stronghold, raised tensions between Israel and Lebanon.

While Israel has not officially commented on carrying out the killing, Barnea’s statements strongly indicated Israeli involvement. He drew parallels to Mossad’s response to the Munich Olympics massacre in 1972.

Hezbollah’s Threat of Retaliation

Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s leader, vowed revenge for Arouri’s killing, dubbing it a “dangerous crime” and adding that the killing wouldn’t go “without response and without punishment”. However, he left the specifics of this response ambiguous.

Nasrallah highlighted Hezbollah’s strategic approach, weighing the need to support Gaza against Lebanese national interests. He warned of a serious response if Israel provoked a war. Talking about a possible attack by Israel on Lebanon, he stated that “They will regret it” and “It will be very, very, very costly”.

Following the Beirut strike, Israel was on high alert for potential escalations with Hezbollah. The Israeli military heightened its readiness along the Lebanon border.

Hamas leaders, anticipating support from Hezbollah, questioned Israel’s rationale for risking war in Lebanon. They hinted at a larger conflict if Israel’s actions were perceived as aggressive.

Saleh Arouri, a key figure in Hamas and liaison with Hezbollah, was a significant loss for the group. His death marked a shift in the conflict’s dynamics, impacting both Hamas’s operations and its coordination with Hezbollah.

The U.S. confirmed Israel’s role in the strike without prior notification, reflecting the sensitivity of the situation. The U.S. also deployed military assets to the region, indicating concerns over escalating conflict.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu mirrored the Mossad chief’s threats, vowing to target Hamas leaders globally. This stance followed the devastating impact of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel.
