Most Americans Disapprove of Key Trump Proposals As Per New Polling Data

After Donald Trump’s election as president in 2016, his attempts to implement promised policy changes took many approaches. While some faced resistance from Congress or the courts, others were deemed impractical. As per a recent YouGov poll that has been reported on a news source, many Americans are unlikely to support several of Trump’s proposed policies if he were to win a second term.

Majority Opposition to Most Policy Ideas

Among 30 policy ideas presented to a national pool of respondents, a majority opposed 22 of them. Only four ideas received majority approval.

Support for Banning Transgender Minors’ Hormonal or Surgical Treatments

The most popular policy, with 57 percent of adults showing some level of support, was the ban on hormonal or surgical treatments for transgender minors.

Limiting Genders

The third most popular policy was Trump’s proposal to legally limit the number of recognized genders in the United States.

Majority Support for Immigration Policies

The other two policies with majority support were related to immigration. One reflected support for the “remain in Mexico” policy, while the other saw a narrow majority of Americans expressing support for deporting thousands of immigrants in the country illegally.

Republican Backing for Other Policies

While most Republicans generally supported the other proposals, no other policies received majority support from all respondents.

Opposition from Trump’s Supporters

Four policies faced opposition from Trump’s supporters. Only 46 percent of them supported making it easier to fire career government employees, and about 20 percent backed putting independent government agencies like the Federal Trade Commission under the presidential umbrella.

Mixed Support for Law Enforcement Policies

The other two policies relate to law enforcement. Just under half of Trump supporters endorsed sending American troops into Mexico to engage drug cartels, while only 4 in 10 backed the idea that federal funding should be dependent on local police forces implementing a stop-and-frisk policy.

Wide Partisan Gap

The widest partisan gap was observed in proposals that have been contentious in recent years.

Border Wall, CRT, Mass Deportations

Building a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border topped the list, followed by a ban on teaching critical race theory, mass deportations, expanding oil drilling, and policies centered on transgender Americans.

Potential Policy Implementation

If Trump wins a second term, some of these ideas may become proposed policies, and a few might be enacted, albeit potentially subject to judicial scrutiny. Notably, the majority of these proposals are widely unpopular among the general public.
