Move Over Cocaine Bear – The Cincinnati Zoo is Caring for an Exotic Cat that Tested Positive for Cocaine

There may be a sequel to “Cocaine Bear,” this time involving an exotic serval cat, according to animal control officials in Ohio.

The Hamilton County dog wardens responded to reports of a “leopard” seen in a tree in Oakley in January. They went to the scene and brought the animal to Cincinnati Animal Care.

Cincinnati Animal Care (CAC) received the animal after officials rescued it from the tree, but it suffered a broken leg in the process.

In an interview with Cincinnati NBC affiliate WLWT, CAC community engagement manager Ray Anderson disclosed the cat, named “Amiry,” is an exotic breed called a serval.

Our expert was certain Amiry was a serval, which is illegal to own in Ohio, Anderson said. “Our original thought was the cat was a hybrid F1 Savannah, which is legal to own in Ohio,” Anderson said.

It is illegal to own a serval cat in Ohio, but not in neighboring Kentucky or Indiana, CBS Cincinnati affiliate WKRC reported.

Nevertheless, a different test revealed something unusual about Amiry: the animal tested positive for cocaine, but how exactly it ingested it remains a mystery.

“I don’t know if the cocaine entered the animal’s system through environmental or experimental means,” Anderson said in a statement to WXIX TV in Cincinnati.

As of Tuesday, Amiry is at the Cincinnati Zoo, which released the following statement:

“We have been taking care of the serval since he was brought to our Animal Health Center. We expect him to do well, and the Cat Ambassador Program team will work with him to determine if he’s a good fit as an ambassador animal. He’ll probably remain behind the scenes for a while.”

Although Cleveland.com reported the cat’s owner has been cooperating with officials and has not been charged, Anderson told HuffPost the investigation remains open. Things could change depending on more information surfaces.
