Navalny’s Family Accuses Officials of “Blackmail”, Forcing Secret Funeral As His Body is Released to Mother

The Russian government gave Alexei Navalny’s body back to his mother over a week after he died in jail in the Arctic.

Navalny’s spokesperson, Kira Yarmysh, said on social media that a funeral will happen.

But the family doesn’t know if the authorities will let them have the funeral “the way the family wants and as Alexey deserves.”

She did not say if the funeral would be public.

Navalny died on February 16 in a jail in the Arctic, Russian officials said.

After he died, his body was moved to the city of Salekhard, located in the Arctic Circle.

Supporters Say Navalny Was Murdered

Navalny’s supporters accused Russian officials of murdering Navalny.

These suspicions arose from the fact that he was a vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin.

Surprisingly, there was an alleged assassination attempt on Navalny, where he was poisoned.

Thankfully, he survived the vicious attack.

Russia Denies Murdering Navalny

Russian officials denied killing Navalny as payback for his political activity.

Navalny’s cause of death was listed as “natural” on the medical report, his spokesperson said.

She got this information from Navalny’s mother.

Mother Asks Police to Investigate Withheld Body

Navalny’s mother, Lyudmila Navalnaya, asked local police on Friday to open a criminal case.

She said investigators were illegally keeping her son’s body from her, on charges of “abuse of a corpse.”

The appeal said the lead investigator looking into Navalny’s death threatened his mother.

It said the investigator promised to do illegal things with Navalny’s body to stop his burial.

Navalnaya said in a YouTube video Thursday that the Russian government is blackmailing her.

She said they were trying to force her to have a secret funeral for her son.

“So, as one of the arguments, the investigator said, ‘time is working against you, because the corpse is decomposing,'” the complaint states.

“Such words cause irreparable moral harm [to Navalny’s mom], grief from the loss of her son is complemented by an absolutely insulting attitude on the part of the investigative authorities and blackmail,” the document says.

U.S. Announces Sanctions Against Russia

Meanwhile, the White House on Friday announced sanctions on Russia and its supporters.

These included new measures meant to punish the Kremlin for its suspected role in Navalny’s death.
