Nevada Judge Attacked During Court Sentencing in Las Vegas

A shocking incident unfolded in a Las Vegas courtroom when a defendant in a felony battery case launched a violent attack on a Nevada judge during sentencing. The courtroom scene turned chaotic as the assailant leaped over a defense table, pounced on the judge, and triggered a bloody brawl involving court officials, attorneys, and witnesses.

Assault on Judge Mary Kay Holthus

Clark County District Judge Mary Kay Holthus was the target of the attack, which occurred around 11 a.m. at the Regional Justice Center in Las Vegas.

The defendant’s actions left Judge Holthus injured, although she did not require hospitalization, according to courthouse officials. A courtroom marshal who came to her aid also suffered injuries and was hospitalized for treatment.

Defendant Identified as Deobra Delone Redden

The attacker, identified as Deobra Delone Redden, 30, was swiftly subdued by court and jail officers, as well as courtroom staff members, during the chaotic incident.

Redden faces multiple new felony charges, including battery on a protected person, referring to the judge and court officers, as per records from the Clark County Detention Center where he was subsequently jailed.

The attack unfolded rapidly, leaving those present in the courtroom stunned. Richard Scow, the chief county district attorney who had been prosecuting Redden in a case stemming from a previous arrest, described the situation as unfolding so quickly that it was challenging to react.

Defendant’s Plea for Leniency

Before the violent incident erupted, Redden, who was not in custody when he arrived in court, stood next to his defense attorney, Caesar Almase. He had requested leniency from the judge, portraying himself as someone who consistently strives to do the right thing. Redden expressed his reluctance towards prison but acknowledged that if it were deemed appropriate by the judge, he would accept the consequences.

As Judge Holthus indicated her intention to incarcerate Redden, and the court marshal moved to handcuff him, the situation escalated dramatically. Redden unleashed a barrage of expletives and charged forward, causing panic and screams among those present in the courtroom audience.

Records revealed that Redden, a Las Vegas resident, had been previously evaluated and found mentally competent to stand trial. In November, he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of attempted battery causing substantial bodily harm in connection with a prior incident. State records also indicated that Redden had served prison time in Nevada for a domestic battery conviction.

Judge Holthus’s Background

Judge Mary Kay Holthus, with over 27 years of experience in the courthouse, had been elected to the state court bench in 2018 and subsequently re-elected in 2022. The attack on her has prompted concerns about courtroom safety and protocols.
