Pennsylvania Republican Kat Copeland Declares Candidacy for Attorney General in 2024

Katayoun “Kat” Copeland, a former federal prosecutor, has announced her intention to run for attorney general of Pennsylvania in the upcoming 2024 election.

Copeland, a Republican, recently left her position in the U.S. attorney’s office in Philadelphia in order to pursue her candidacy for the state’s highest law enforcement position.

The attorney general’s office, with an annual budget of approximately $140 million, holds a critical role in combatting drug trafficking, gun trafficking, upholding state laws in court, and safeguarding consumers against exploitative practices.

Notably, the office played a significant role in defending Joe Biden’s victory in Pennsylvania during the 2020 election. It actively worked to counter repeated attempts by Donald Trump’s campaign and Republican allies to overturn the election results in both state and federal courts.

Copeland, 56, brings extensive experience to the table, having previously served as a prosecutor in Delaware County, a suburban area of Philadelphia. She also spent two years as the court-appointed district attorney in the same county. In 2019, Copeland ran for a full four-year term but lost to Democrat Jack Stollsteimer.

Throughout her career, Copeland has dedicated three decades to the field of prosecution, working both in the district attorney’s office and eventually rising to the position of chief of the criminal division in the U.S. attorney’s office.

Additionally, she has been involved in national security and cybercrime cases. As she enters the race for attorney general, Copeland faces competition within her own party.

Dave Sunday, the district attorney of York County, has already announced his candidacy and has received the endorsement of the Republican Attorneys General Association. Craig Williams, a state House member from Delaware County, has also expressed his intention to run.

On the Democratic side, four candidates have already declared their campaigns: state Rep. Jared Solomon of Philadelphia, former state Auditor General Eugene DePasquale, former federal prosecutor Joe Kahn, and Keir Bradford-Grey, the former head of public defense lawyers in both Philadelphia and Montgomery County.

The deadline for candidates to file their paperwork to appear on the primary ballot is February 13, with the primary election scheduled for April 23.

Current Attorney General Michelle Henry, who was appointed to fulfill the remainder of Josh Shapiro’s term when he became governor, has confirmed that she will not seek a full term in office.
