President Biden expresses regret to Muslim-American leaders for doubting Gaza death toll: report

President Joe Biden has reportedly issued an apology to several prominent Muslim-American leaders after expressing skepticism about the accuracy of the death toll figures from Gaza. During a press conference on October 25, President Biden openly questioned the reported number of casualties in Gaza, which are provided by the Hamas government.

He stated, “I have no notion that the Palestinians are telling the truth about how many people are killed… I’m sure innocents have been killed, and it’s a price of waging war.”

The day after his comments, Biden met with five Muslim American leaders, where he listened to their accounts of people they personally knew who were affected by the conflict in the Middle East.

According to the Washington Post, Biden told the group, “I’m sorry. I’m disappointed in myself.” During the meeting, the Muslim-American leaders urged Biden to show more empathy towards the Palestinians. Reportedly, Biden even hugged one of the participants at the end of the meeting.

According to data from the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health, over 14,000 Palestinians, including many women and children, have been killed in the weeks-old war in Gaza. Israeli officials state that Israel has suffered over 1,200 fatalities, primarily civilians, due to a surprise attack by the Hamas terror group on October 7.

Biden has faced criticism from within his own administration and some prominent Democrats for his response to the war. While he has expressed support for Israel, Biden has also advocated for a pause in the fighting to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza and the release of hostages held by Hamas.

He stated, “For weeks, I’ve been advocating to pause the fighting for two purposes: to increase the assistance getting into the Gaza civilians who need help and to facilitate the release of hostages… We know that innocent children in Gaza are suffering greatly as well.”
