President Biden Under Fire for Refusing to Label Southern Border Situation a ‘Crisis’

Biden’s approach to the U.S.-Mexico border has drawn bipartisan criticism due to the significant increase in migrant border encounters. In the 2023 fiscal year, there were over 2.4 million encounters, a notable rise from approximately 1.7 million in 2021, as reported by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Republicans attribute this surge to what they perceive as Biden’s lenient border policies, which they argue incentivize illegal immigration. On the other hand, some experts argue that various factors, including political and financial instability in certain Central American countries, contribute to the migration influx.

Adding to the controversy, many migrants have been transported from Texas to “sanctuary cities” controlled by Democrats. These cities offer protection to undocumented immigrants against deportation, triggering fresh criticism from Democrats. The issue of immigration has gained prominence in anticipation of the 2024 election.

Questioning Biden

While speaking to reporters on the White House South Lawn, President Biden was asked whether he considered the situation at the southern border a “crisis.”

In response, he stated, “No, but I wish they would react. I’ve been pushing them—my Republican colleagues—since I got into office. I think we have to make major changes at the border. I’ve been pushing it. I’m prepared to make significant alterations at the border. And there are negotiations going on for the last five weeks, so I’m hopeful we’ll get there.”
