Paul pointed to an email from February 2020 in which Fauci discussed a call with British medical researcher Jeremy Farrar.
According to Fauci’s email, experts on the call expressed concern about certain mutations in the virus that appeared unusual and potentially intentionally inserted.
Fauci also mentioned that scientists at Wuhan University had been working on gain-of-function experiments related to bat viruses adapting to human infection.
Fauci has vehemently denied lying to Congress and refuted claims that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded gain-of-function research.
He stated that he had “never lied before Congress” and pushed back against Paul’s assertions.

Paul highlighted that recent admissions by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and the acting director of the NIH contradict Fauci’s claims.
Paul criticized the partisan nature of the legal system and expressed his concern that no action would be taken due to the current political climate.
The dispute between Paul and Fauci underscores the ongoing controversy surrounding the origins of the coronavirus and the extent of U.S. involvement in funding research in China..
