Rep. McCaul Claims Impeachment Possible By End of The Month For Mayorkas

House Foreign Affairs Chair Michael McCaul (R-Texas) hinted at the potential impeachment of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, suggesting there might be sufficient support for such an action by the end of the month. McCaul cited increased illegal border crossings and the fentanyl trafficking crisis as reasons for considering Mayorkas’s removal.

McCaul’s statements come as House Republicans intensify their push for Mayorkas’s impeachment, arguing that his actions warrant such measures.

Mayorkas’s decision to rescind the “Remain in Mexico” policy, implemented by former President Trump in 2019, has drawn criticism. This policy required asylum seekers to await proceedings in Mexico rather than being released into the United States.

Critics, including McCaul, argue that by ending this policy, Mayorkas has effectively reinstated “catch and release,” leading to the release of illegal aliens into American society and causing harm to the nation’s fabric.

House Hearings Begin

House Republicans have initiated a series of impeachment hearings against Mayorkas. During a recent hearing, House Homeland Security Chair Mark Green (R-Tenn) accused Mayorkas of failing to detain migrants and releasing those who pass an initial screening into the country.

Green asserted that Mayorkas’s actions represent a willful violation of his oath of office, alleging that the border crisis is “intentional,” although this claim remains unsubstantiated.

He highlighted that DHS had removed or returned more noncitizens without a legal basis to remain in the United States in recent months and that a majority of migrants encountered at the southwest border were removed, returned, or expelled.

In November, the House voted to send articles of impeachment against Mayorkas to Green’s committee. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) rejected an attempt to expedite the process.

House Republicans plan to hold further hearings to consider Mayorkas’s potential impeachment. While the next hearing is scheduled for Thursday, it remains uncertain whether Mayorkas will accept the invitation to appear.

If successful, Mayorkas’s impeachment would mark only the second time in history that a Cabinet secretary has been expelled from office.
