Rupert Murdoch Deposed in Smartmatic Lawsuit Against Fox News

The legal battle between Smartmatic and Fox News continues to intensify, with Rupert Murdoch, the former head of Fox News’ parent company, recently giving a sworn deposition in the defamation lawsuit.

Smartmatic, an election-technology company, has accused Fox News of spreading false claims about vote rigging, similar to the defamation suit Fox settled with Dominion Voting Systems. Lachlan Murdoch, who now runs the family’s media business, and Fox’s former top lawyer, Viet D. Dinh, will also be deposed in the case.

Fox believes it can win the case, arguing that Smartmatic’s massive claim of $2.7 billion in financial losses is unfounded. However, Smartmatic argues that its enterprise value was significantly damaged by the allegedly defamatory statements made by Fox News hosts. Both sides are currently engaged in the discovery process, and the case is expected to go to trial in 2025.
