Russia Responds to Drone Threat with Jammers on Tanks

In an effort to counter the increasing danger posed by exploding drones, Russia has started equipping its tanks and vehicles with jammers. This move highlights the growing electronic warfare on the battlefield as both sides attempt to protect their troops from the relentless attacks of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Recently, a camouflaged tank with a jammer on its roof screen was captured in a photo shared on a Russian Telegram channel. It was identified as a Volnorez C-UAS EW jammer, designed to defend against first-person view (FPV) drone attacks.

The same jammer system has been spotted being attached to other vehicles through multiple photos and videos. Russian Telegram channels are even crowdfunding to purchase more of these jammers for Russian units.

Although the effectiveness and the current usage of these systems remain unknown, Russia’s decision to integrate them into vehicles showcases the increasing concern over FPV drone attacks.

In the past, tank and armored crews resorted to welding cages onto their vehicles as a rudimentary defense. However, both sides of the conflict are striving to develop drones that are resistant to jamming, forcing vehicle crews to explore alternative solutions.

This development also sheds light on the intensifying drone war between Russia and Ukraine. Drones have emerged as a constant threat that can surprise unsuspecting targets. Ukraine, in particular, has demonstrated remarkable skill in using FPV drones to infiltrate small open hatches on tanks and Russian trenches.

Moreover, they have developed their own domestically made drone equipped with thermal imaging for efficient nocturnal raids. This drone has become so feared by Russia that it has acquired the sinister nickname of “Baba Yaga.”
