Special Prosecutor Appointed to Investigate Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones in Trump Case

A special prosecutor will be appointed to investigate Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, a Republican, in connection with allegations related to former President Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in the state.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis had initially been ordered not to indict Jones due to a conflict of interest.

Willis announced a 98-page indictment on Monday night, charging Trump and 18 others with attempting to alter the election results in Trump’s favor.

The indictment included individuals such as former Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani, former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows, and members of Trump’s legal team Jenna Ellis and Sidney Powell.

While Jones was not listed in the indictment, he was one of the so-called “fake electors” who asserted that Trump won Georgia and tried to conduct a secretive meeting at the State Capitol in December 2020 to overturn President Biden’s victory.

The lieutenant governor has denied wrongdoing, asserting that he and other electors acted to preserve Trump’s chances if he won in court.

Jones was not indicted because Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney had ordered Willis to remove him from the investigation due to a conflict of interest.

McBurney had previously noted that any decision made about Jones in connection with the investigation would be tainted by this conflict.

The decision to appoint a special prosecutor comes after the Georgia Prosecuting Attorneys Council Executive Director Pete Skandalakis decided to wait until an indictment was handed down before making this determination.

The special prosecutor will ultimately decide whether to file charges against Jones.

Skandalakis noted that the challenge lies in finding a special prosecutor due to resource limitations and the relatively low compensation offered for such cases in Georgia.

While the exact details of the investigation into Jones remain unknown, the appointment of a special prosecutor indicates the ongoing scrutiny surrounding individuals allegedly involved in the events surrounding the 2020 election in Georgia.
