Teacher Accused in Racially Offensive Classroom Display Claims Racial Discrimination

Teacher Identified and Exonerated

Years later, Nancy Jones Doering revealed herself as one of the teachers accused in the incident. In October 2022, a Hearing Officer exonerated her, ordering her reinstatement as a social studies teacher at Roosevelt Middle School, an area with a significant Black or African American population.

Despite her exoneration, Jones Doering claims that she has lived in constant anxiety and fear for herself and her family since the incident.

The lawsuit mentions that media outlets reported on the accusations, leading community members to attack and harass her publicly. Pastor Arthur Mackey J, a local pastor, described the image as “totally unacceptable” and a “hate crime and racial discrimination” when it first came to light in 2019.

Removed The Collage

Jones Doering discovered the collage the next day, removed it, and placed it in a locked cabinet in her classroom. She later accompanied the teacher, whose classroom had initially displayed the collage, to a Human Resources meeting.
