Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently visited the border and voiced his endorsement for former President Donald Trump and his immigration policies. Speaking in a town near the Hidalgo Port of Entry in Texas, Abbott emphasized the need for a president who will secure the border and stated, “We need Donald J. Trump back as our president of the United States of America.”
During their visit, Trump and Abbott interacted with Texas National Guard soldiers, troopers, and other personnel stationed at the border for Thanksgiving. They distributed meals, including tacos, and Trump commended the Guard members, stating, “What you do is incredible, and you want it to be done right.”
Abbott highlighted his belief that these personnel should be at home rather than at the border, attributing their presence to the lack of border security under the current administration. He criticized President Biden, suggesting that the only reason for their deployment was due to the inadequate measures taken to protect the border.
Trump has introduced immigration proposals that signify a significant escalation from his previous policies, which garnered attention and faced legal challenges. While Trump briefly mentioned his immigration plans during his visit to the border, he primarily focused on other issues, such as inflation, the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, and media coverage. He emphasized the effectiveness of walls in border security and expressed his intention to build more walls along the border.
In addition to expanding the border wall, Trump’s proposals include reviving and expanding the travel ban, implementing ideological screening for immigrants, barring supporters of Hamas, deporting immigrants with “jihadist sympathies,” utilizing the Alien Enemies Act to remove gang members and drug dealers, ending birthright citizenship, terminating work permits, cracking down on legal asylum-seekers, advocating for the death penalty in cases of human trafficking, and repositioning federal law enforcement agents at the southern border.
Both Trump and Abbott have been actively involved in border-related issues, with Trump making frequent visits during his presidential campaign and tenure. The border has also been a focal point for Abbott’s agenda, leading to ongoing clashes with the Biden administration over immigration. Abbott has allocated significant funding for border wall construction, implemented razor wire measures, and transported migrants to Democratic-led cities.
