Within the Democratic party, a growing schism between the center and the left is poised to disrupt the party’s cohesion. This internal discord can potentially unseat members of the progressive group “The Squad,” creating an unexpected advantage for Donald Trump’s Republicans in the upcoming 2024 elections.

The catalyst for this internal clash is the war in Gaza, a divisive issue that has deeply split Democrats. The repercussions are expected to reverberate in party primaries, particularly influencing the selection of candidates for the House of Representatives.

Critical members of “The Squad,” including Jamaal Bowman, Cori Bush, and Ilhan Omar, known for their outspoken views on Israel’s role in the Gaza conflict, now find themselves facing formidable primary challengers. This potential shake-up raises concerns about the party’s overall strength in the November elections.

Chris Scott, co-founder of the Advance the Electorate political action committee, cautions against internal battles within the Democratic faction during this critical cycle. The focus should be on addressing a more significant threat rather than engaging in divisive struggles within the party.

Ideological Differences

While the left has celebrated victories during Joe Biden’s presidency, ideological tensions persist, particularly on issues such as climate, immigration, racial justice, and the handling of the Gaza conflict. This internal discord poses a challenge to party unity.

As the primary season approaches, ideological clashes between progressives and centrists are set to escalate. Races in Alabama, Arkansas, California, North Carolina, and Texas will serve as the battlegrounds for these confrontations.

High-Profile Challenges

Notable challenges include George Latimer’s bid against Jamaal Bowman, Wesley Bell’s contest with Cori Bush, and Don Samuels’ challenge to Ilhan Omar. These contests reflect a broader struggle between centrist and progressive ideologies.

Centrists within the Democratic party see an opportunity to leverage these primary contests, putting progressives on the defensive regarding their voting records. The perceived influence of “The Squad” in swing districts has been a point of contention.

The battles may extend beyond ideological differences, with pro-Israel Super PACs and dark-money groups potentially spending millions on attack ads against progressive candidates. The focus could be misrepresenting their views, especially regarding the Gaza conflict.

The Democratic Majority for Israel PAC (DMFI PAC) has already initiated a campaign targeting Representative Rashida Tlaib, signaling a broader effort to influence Democratic primaries. The group emphasizes a commitment to the US-Israel relationship.
