Russia’s Grain Deal Withdrawal Impacts Food Prices
The recent surge in food prices followed Russia’s decision to withdraw from a United Nations-brokered grain deal. This agreement had facilitated the shipment of Ukrainian produce through the Black Sea to regions grappling with widespread hunger.
Hopes for a Peace Summit to End Russian Invasion
Zelensky expressed optimism that the current summit, where key principles to end the Russian invasion are being discussed, would pave the way for a larger “peace summit” in the fall. This upcoming gathering aims to endorse the initiatives outlined during the current talks.
Ukraine’s Plan to End Conflict and Russia’s Response
Ukraine had previously proposed a plan to end the conflict, which included calls for Russia to respect its territories and withdraw troops from the areas it claims to have annexed. However, Russia rejected the plan, albeit stating it will monitor the developments at the summit.
China’s Presence as a Neutral Party
China, despite being criticized for its perceived lack of condemnation of Russia’s invasion, has asserted its neutral stance in the conflict. China sent Special Envoy for Eurasian Affairs Li Hui to the summit and expressed its commitment to playing a constructive role in seeking a political solution to the crisis in Ukraine.
